What happened on Great Britain's roads on this date last year, using official police-reported figures from the Department for Transport. The page moves to a new date automatically each day.
Prototype for discussion. Real 2025 figures, not yet connected to the live site. Member claims are a demo: use made-up details.

The 14 Crown Prosecution Service areas of England and Wales, plus Scotland and Northern Ireland. Police forces are grouped into these areas; the Met is split into London North and South by borough. Daily regional numbers are small and vary a lot from day to day.
Each dot is a collision reported to police where someone was hurt. Behind every one is a person and a family. Names, ages and sexes are not shown. If this is your collision and you would like it removed from the map, email contact@roadahead.org.uk.

Killed or seriously injured, by road user
Pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists are counted by the person hurt, not by the other vehicles involved. Follows the region selected on the map. Regional figures are rounded separately, so they may not add up exactly to the Great Britain total.
About these figures
Source: DfT road casualty statistics (STATS19), 2025 final data, published 2026 under the Open Government Licence.
Coverage: England, Wales and Scotland. Northern Ireland is recorded separately by PSNI and is not included.
Only collisions reported to police where someone was hurt. Many slight injuries never reach these figures.
Seriously injured uses DfT's adjusted method, the same one behind the official headline totals.
Serious or slight is decided from what police knew shortly after the collision, not from a medical examination, so some injuries turn out more or less severe than recorded.

How this would run on the live site
The whole page is about 230 KB including the daily figures and the maps, and would sit inside the Lovable site. The page reads today's date and shows the matching day. No server, database or API.
Updated once a year when DfT publishes final figures each July. After that, 2026 replaces 2025.
Until July, the most recent final year is two years back, so the label shows the year itself instead of saying "last year".
Individual collisions only in the close-up. The national view shows totals. Selecting a region shows each collision with the same details DfT publishes, without names, ages or sexes. Families can ask for a collision to be hidden.
Collision details load one month at a time (about 1 MB each) only when someone opens a region, so the page stays fast.
Recorded collision factors are not included. DfT removes the contributory factors police record from its open data and releases them only on request. Even then they are the reporting officer's view at the time, not confirmed causes. A cause is only established by a court, an inquest or a formal investigation.
Members can claim their collision (demo). Open a collision and choose "This is my collision" to add what they believe contributed to it, where the legal case has got to, and the support wanted. Private by default; the member ticks what to show publicly. In this demo it is saved only in your browser. The real version needs member sign-in, a members database, and a data protection impact assessment before launch.
